POSITION SUMMARY The primary responsibility for the General Manager and for all positions at FL Davis Ace Hardware is to WOW Every Customer Every Time and uphold our Core Values. The General Manager is responsible for maximizing store sales and profitability, along with minimizing expenses while ensuring that the store is optimally stocked and merchandised. The General Manager is responsible for the growth and development of the store management team and store associates and for maintaining a safe environment for our customers and team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SALES AND OPERATIONS
Ensure customers experience prompt and courteous service, sales are maximized, expenses are minimized, and business expectations relating to items such as (but not limited to) margins, inventory levels, labor hours, team member training, back‑office functions, and other reporting are properly maintained.
Oversee delegation of daily workload among associates to meet merchandising and visual presentation standards.
Ensure completion of merchandising updates according to FL Davis Ace Hardware standards.
Assist with the development of and oversee the implementation of in‑store marketing, including promotions, events and seasonal merchandising based on store needs.
Review all store evaluations with store management team and staff to identify opportunity areas and correct all issues with a sense of urgency.
Coordinate the supervision of staff to ensure sales performance goals are met and business procedures are followed accurately.
Work with vendors to develop merchandising strategies for products and have them assist with their plan‑ogram and updates.
Forecast scheduling needs to meet customer demand and review work schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
Monitor payroll to ensure compliance with established budgets and take corrective measures as necessary.
Review staffing strengths and opportunities with District Manager and Human Resources prior to additions or terminations.
Hire, train and develop retail staff with goals for growth and success in their positions, provide ongoing performance feedback and recognize accomplishments.
Conduct and review, as applicable, associate evaluations to provide feedback for improvement, recognition, and growth opportunities.
Ensure a culture of accountability across the entire team.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Ensure training of and regularly promote, coach, and motivate associates on our Customer First Sales Culture, accomplished daily through observing, monitoring and coaching associate’s performance and interactions on the sales floor. Lead by example.
Use huddles, WOW communication boards, and store meetings to communicate the store’s performance, and educate, engage and motivate the team.
Drive customer satisfaction by ensuring that all customers are acknowledged, customer needs are met, and concerns are resolved quickly.
Review all customer service measurement reports (e.g., Mystery Shop, Customer Engagement Survey, etc.), and work with the team to identify opportunities to sustain or improve overall service levels.
Perform all sales counter functions, point‑of‑sale (register) functions, and store administrative functions as needed.
Ensure that the retail sales floor is properly merchandised by implementing local and business directives such as key assortments, planograms, seasonal items, promotional displays, pricing updates, and end caps.
Organize personnel and internal processes to ensure that customer deliveries are properly loaded and are delivered on time, on‑grade, and complete.
Manage and motivate contractor salesmen to aggressively prospect for new sales and customers while remaining highly attentive to the ongoing needs of the existing customer base.
INVENTORY
Maintain accurate inventory at all stages through on‑hand integrity, daily receiving, transfers, store communication, product mix and flow, and adhering to FL Davis Ace Hardware best practices, metrics and deadlines.
Utilize available inventory reports to reduce shrinkage, maintain appropriate stock levels and maximize inventory accuracy.
Ensure that all inventory movement (sales, returns, transfers, adjustments) is recorded timely and accurately to help detect and prevent shrinkage.
Ensure that the store keeps proper amounts of inventory on hand, sufficient to meet customers’ needs, but in line with inventory investment goals.
Ensure that the inventory is maintained in a clean and orderly fashion, consistent with business policy and good business practices.
Ensure that warehouse and yard personnel accurately receive and properly store merchandise.
BUDGETING
Drive store sales and profit to exceed business objectives.
Understand the dynamics that impact the financial performance of the store and remain accountable to results that meet or exceed business objectives.
Control costs and schedule in a manner for driving labor productivity and customer service.
ASSOCIATE DEVELOPMENT
Oversee supervision of all store and yard associates, develop and mentor managers.
Create a team environment throughout the store.
Identify appropriate training for store associates and oversee all training requirements for all associates (e.g. New Hire Orientation, on‑the‑job training, vendor training, etc.).
Foster a positive and enjoyable working environment that is conducive to self‑motivation, high productivity, accountability and overall morale.
Set goals and provide immediate feedback on associate performance and implement corrective measures. Help the team succeed.
Ensure an open‑door environment where associates feel free to report problems and offer ideas to management.
SAFETY, COMPLIANCE AND STORE ENVIRONMENT
Serve as a role model for safety and enforce safety policies and procedures.
Enforce store environment procedures to ensure and maintain the best store appearance.
Conduct preventive safety and fire inspections and take appropriate actions to correct all issues.
Ensure the location and equipment are safe, clean, well‑kept, and properly maintained.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
3 to 5 years of management or supervisory experience in the retail/building material industry or related field required.
Able to work a flexible schedule (typical retail schedule – 50+ hours/week) including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Possess a valid in‑state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to motivate and lead associates storewide in a fair and consistent manner.
High degree of analytical skills.

Technically skilled in retail computer systems and related software.

Strong mathematical and general business skills to understand and interpret data presented in statistical or numerical form and be able to use it effectively in assessing and coordinating the merchandise and operations aspects of store operations.
Excellent working knowledge of retail building materials, home improvement and hardware products, and general retail operations including the ability to utilize Point‑of‑sales and other computer‑related systems (i.e., Estimating Software, etc.) associated with the building material industry.
Understand and able to perform all functions of store operations, including the lumber yard, the showroom, the lawnmower shop, appliances, and the back office.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

MIMIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk, reach, and bend to perform job duties.
Ability to manage physical assets and perform physical work, including the ability to bend, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and be able to frequently lift and/or move between 50 - 80 pounds.
