Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) on behalf of a respected and growing nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families achieve stability, housing security, and long-term self-sufficiency. Through a comprehensive continuum of services, the organization works at the forefront of addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing communities today, providing critical support, advocacy, housing resources, and life-changing programs to vulnerable populations throughout the region.

This is a full-time interim leadership opportunity based in Los Angeles, California, with the potential to transition into a permanent executive role. POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Interim Chief Operating Officer will serve as a key strategic partner to the CEO and executive leadership team, overseeing daily operations, program implementation, compliance, and organizational effectiveness across a diverse portfolio of community-based programs. This leader will play a critical role in translating organizational vision into action by strengthening infrastructure, enhancing operational performance, supporting program excellence, and ensuring accountability across multiple departments.

The COO will lead and mentor a team of program and operational leaders while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is an emotionally intelligent and solutions-oriented executive who thrives in mission-driven environments and brings a proven ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational execution. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide executive oversight of organizational operations, ensuring efficient, compliant, and mission-focused service delivery • Lead and support program directors and department leaders across housing, shelter, outreach, navigation, and supportive service programs • Monitor program performance, contractual outcomes, and key performance indicators while implementing continuous improvement initiatives • Ensure compliance with funding requirements, grants, contracts, audits, and regulatory standards • Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning, organizational growth, staffing effectiveness, and operational priorities • Develop systems, workflows, and accountability measures that strengthen organizational performance and sustainability

QUALIFICATIONS: • Demonstrated experience leading nonprofit, human services, social services, behavioral health, housing, community development, healthcare, or other mission-driven organizations with complex operational structures • Proven success overseeing multiple programs, departments, locations, or service lines while balancing strategic priorities with day-to-day operational needs • Strong knowledge of nonprofit operations, compliance, contract management, grants administration, reporting requirements, risk management, and organizational best practices • Experience managing, mentoring, and developing leaders while building cultures rooted in accountability, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement • Skilled in evaluating organizational performance through data, metrics, dashboards, and key performance indicators to drive informed decision-making • Ability to lead organizational change initiatives, streamline processes, and implement systems that improve efficiency and service delivery • Strong financial acumen with experience partnering on budgeting, resource allocation, workforce planning, and long-term organizational sustainability • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage staff, executive leadership, board members, funders, and community partners • Experience navigating fast-paced environments with competing priorities while maintaining a solutions-oriented and mission-focused approach • Passion for serving communities and advancing programs that create meaningful and measurable social impact

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This interim opportunity offers a compensation range of $70-76/hour, plus health benefits and sick time with the potential for conversion to a permanent executive leadership position.
