## About the company and the role
Our client is a rapidly growing, dynamic firm specializing in heavy highway construction, sitework, underground utilities, and excavation. They serve public and private customers across Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest and focus on DOT, public works, and large commercial and residential projects. The company highlights a collegial environment that supports professional growth and leadership opportunities.
### What this position does
The Lead Estimator will manage preparation and submission of estimates for heavy civil/highway projects including road interchanges, drainage systems, earthwork, and underground utilities (sewer, water, storm drain). This is a remote role (Madison, WI is the location indicated) where you will oversee and perform professional estimating duties and manage the bid process for multiple projects at once. You will also supervise estimating team members and be responsible for mentoring, training, and quality assurance.
You will be expected to:
- Prepare, review, and solicit estimates for bidding site work; perform quantity takeoff and pricing for bidding purposes; and prepare final project costs and construction budgets from cost estimates.
- Review contract documents and understand project parameters, demonstrating a thorough understanding of construction means and methods.
- Stay updated on market trends and fluctuations in material prices to inform bids.
Daily interactions include building relationships with customers, clients, and vendors, providing oversight of project scheduling and cost containment, and maintaining regular communication with company leadership and mid-level management. You will lead a team of field staff, subcontractors, and project personnel, ensuring projects operate according to schedule and to maximum profitability while maintaining rigorous safety standards.
### Qualifications and experience
This position requires 5+ years of project management experience in earthwork, underground utilities, and/or heavy highway construction. Candidates should have a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or commensurate experience. A strong work ethic, exemplary leadership and communication skills, and in-depth knowledge of project management software are required.
### Compensation and benefits
The position is listed at $100k - $130k / year. Additional benefits include a discretionary annual bonus, 401(k) match, major medical/dental/vision insurance, and paid time off.
If you bring practical estimating experience—quantity takeoff, pricing, budgeting, contract review—and the ability to lead and develop a team, this role offers the chance to work on significant heavy civil projects with a supportive, growth-oriented employer.
